Chapter 6- Stockpile

The night was restless for Fred at the thought of a Mexican henchman in the other room next to the incredibly sexy woman he’d brought along with him to serve as a seductress. Adding to the discomfort was the ball of confusion snuggled up next to him. Her soft breath exhalations against his skin turned his academic mind into a straight run to the gutter. The woman in the other room almost sent his mind there as well, but she didn’t appear to be very bright. Vapid women were a turnoff to him, no matter how amazing they looked. At the end of the evening, what he valued more than anything, was the ability to have a meaningful conversation.

He was up before the clock went off at six. He turned off the alarm to give Penny more time to sleep. Fred slogged his was down the hall to the bathroom for a quick shower, shave, and shit before getting his day moving. He made fast work of it all, dressing comfortably, knowing he’d need to venture out to the generator if and when he threw the breaker and the lights didn’t pop on.

First thing was first; he needed coffee. As much as he loved it, the tannins in red wine usually left him sluggish the next morning and in need of a boost of something sugary. In the old days, it was a jug of electrolyte water to get the noggin blogging, but the sodium content disagreed with his blood pressure.

Faint rays of light shone through the dirty windows, illuminating the clouds of dust falling through the air in slow motion, seeking a resting place to accumulate like snowdrifts on a mountainside. His mind wandered as he put on the kettle to boil the water to make coffee. While the water boiled, he ventured into the utility room to locate the fuse box. The power had initially been on when he and Lana had come out a few weeks ago since it had been so soon after Philoneus’ death. The Society of the Golden Orb, having been made aware of the wishes of the man to leave the home to the organization acted with all due haste to get the paperwork in order to secure the deed to the property and to get Fred working inside of it.

Locating the fuse box was easy; getting it open required nearly all of his strength. The rust along with years of bug secretions inside the junction box made the opening sound of crunching when he finally got the hinges to give way. He flipped the major switch and nothing happened.

“Fusebox,” he said softly, meaning he would need to traipse out in the mud to reset the generator, possibly add fuel, and not cry. “Coffee, breakfast, and then a plan.”

On his return to the kitchen, curiosity made him stop in the sunroom. The envelope in the wall safe, if it held the map Desirío sought, that man and his sex kitten could be gone after breakfast.
